To all the fathers,

Who were told not to show their feelings as little boys looking for comfort. Told to withstand whatever anyone said or did to them without acknowledging how badly it made them feel. Bullied and ignored to learn ‘how to be a man.’ Forced into silence and isolation.

We know that you did your best. Tried to make your parents wishes come true at the cost of your own. Came to America speaking the most beautiful and poetic language in the world only to be laughed at for your accent because it was different than the singular standard the white man knew.

We’re sorry for the racism and discrimination that you had to endure as you paved the way as the first class of us to make it in America. For enduring so much as you built the foundations for us at great cost to yourself. Most everything is more difficult the first time, especially as an immigrant of color. Especially in America.

Now is your time to flourish and laugh and acknowledge all of the things you feel and felt. Enjoy everything you worked so hard for and the company of your children. We will not repeat the mistakes.

You deserve the sun and the moon. We love you so much.

Happy Father’s Day

In dedication to my father, uncles and grandfathers
